A pioneering power generation project, which saw the creation of a satellite power generation plant for one of Europe’s largest rail infrastructure projects has won the Project of the Year award.
Eminox, in partnership with Sunbelt Rentals UK and Ireland, has provided the most efficient and environmentally friendly solution for a critical energy farm near Bromford, West Midlands, overcoming the challenge to provide 10MVA of energy to power tunnelling equipment, using localised power generation due to a lack of grid connection.
“We are delighted to have had this project recognised at the AMPS awards 2023, and to have developed such a revolutionary solution to mobile power generation with Sunbelt Rentals,” said Carlos Vicente, Aftermarket & Retrofit Director, Eminox. “Collaborative effort between us has set a new standard in emission reduction capability for remote power generation projects, conforming to stringent safety requirements.”
The high voltage electricity compound is a complex and bespoke energy farm with retrofitted emission abatement technology designed specifically for this project.
The technology is an advanced active emissions control system which reduces all regulated, harmful tailpipe emissions including articulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) to near-zero levels.
This ‘first of a kind’ emissions reduction project saw a system was designed featuring 20 x 500 KvA generators which convert low voltage power to high voltage power, 11,000 volts in this case.
The 500KvA generator node size was chosen as opposed to a 1250KvA option as it provides a significant running cost saving (£66K/week) and requires less fuel burn. Furthermore, a third of the volume of urea (AdBlue) is required, compared with a larger generator node size.
Mick Ledden, Managing Director – Energy Solutions at Sunbelt Rentals added; “This innovation was incredibly well received and is another testament to the company’s commitment to our sustainability strategy, Our Planet.
Despite the challenging and remote conditions, the success of the tailored emissions-based solution proves the expertise, adaptability, and resourcefulness of all those involved. We look forward to developing similar systems for customers throughout the UK and beyond.
