Don’t leave ULEZ preparations to the last minute, warns Eminox

Now is the time to prepare for London’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) warns Eminox Business Development Manager Carlos Vicente.

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has confirmed that the new ULEZ will take effect from 8th April 2019, 17 months earlier than originally planned, to help reduce roadside pollution in the capital.

Around 50,000 people in the UK die prematurely each year due to air pollution, 9,000 of them from the London area alone.

This early introduction has created some very tight deadlines for operators to make sure their vehicles abide by the new regulations to avoid additional daily charges of £100. The penalty for entering the zone with a non-compliant vehicle without paying the charge, is £1000.

The ULEZ, which will initially be the same area as the congestion charge zone, will impact on all diesel vehicles that don’t meet Euro VI emission standards. The mayor also plans to consult on expanding the area to cover nearly all of Greater London in 2020.

ULEZ will replace the T-Charge which has just come into effect but the charge will be in addition to the current congestion fees.

“Although it may seem like a long time away, the start of the ULEZ is sooner than you think and with only a handful of suppliers, like Eminox, able to retrofit heavy duty vehicles to Euro VI standards, it’s best to get enquiries in early,”

warns Eminox Business Development Manager, Carlos Vicente.

Eminox SCRT offers operators impacted by the ULEZ the ability to retrofit their existing vehicles for around a 10th of the cost of buying a new Euro VI standard coach.

Carlos continued:

“This is a much more cost efficient way for operators to be able to meet ULEZ requirements than having to buy new vehicles. However, each make and model of vehicle will need a specifically designed SCRT system – it’s simply not a case of one size fits all. It will take time to meet customer demands and last minute orders are likely to miss ULEZ deadlines. We want operators impacted by this to get in touch with us today so that we can understand their requirements and advise on the best solutions for their fleets.”

Eminox SCRT has already been approved to aid in the £86.1 million project retrofitting 5,000 Transport for London buses.

Over the coming months, Eminox will be adding new SCRT developments allowing more vehicles to be upgraded to Euro VI emission standards.
