Against tough competition, Niki Welch, Head of Retrofit Engineering at Eminox, has won the prestigious 2018 Air Quality Champion award at the National Air Quality Awards, for his work in reducing harmful gas emissions from diesel heavy-duty vehicles. This has contributed to a 25,000 tonne reduction in NOx emissions from buses and trucks over the last 10 years alone, improving air quality, safeguarding public health and saving lives.

Since joining Eminox 21 years ago, Niki has been involved in developing over 100 different NOx-reducing exhaust after-treatment systems, which have been retrofitted to more than 4,500 buses across the UK and in cities around the world including Copenhagen, Barcelona and Hong Kong. He is currently leading a team working with Transport for London on the world’s largest SCRT retrofit programme, which aims to improve 5,000 buses across London. Eminox has been involved in designing, manufacturing and fitting over 65% of London bus upgrades in the last year.

Organised by AirQualityNews.com in partnership with Mercedes Benz Trucks, the National Air Quality Awards are now in their fourth year, with winners announced earlier this month, following on from the National Air Quality Conference. The ceremony was opened by Geraint Davies, MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Air Pollution. Other winners included Leeds City Council, Greater London Authority and London Electric Vehicle Company.

Their team is working closely with industry partners to achieve further CVRAS accreditations for a wide range of vehicles ahead of the London ULEZ and other emissions zones.
