Description

The role would suit an individual with an extensive experience and knowledge of structural fatigue and durability analysis techniques for automotive components and requires someone who feels challenged with innovative product development and integration of analysis led design approaches, displaying a proven track record. You would be required to lead, undertake and deliver FEA analysis on complex systems and be able to act as driver for suggesting changes/improvements in the design that will drive robust products for our customers.

Qualifications

• BSc, BEng (Mechanical, Automotive, Machine Design) - essential
• MEng (with specialisation in fatigue, durability, automotive system design) - desirable
• Ansys Mechanical Advanced User - desirable

Knowledge and Experience:

• Use of FE methods and techniques for durability and fatigue analysis of automotive systems at an advanced level - essential
• Experience with developing automotive products using FE techniques for durability assessments such as Bending Moment Loading, Random Vibration and Thermomechanical Fatigue - essential
• Demonstrate ability to understand customer requirements for durability and advising the scope of FEA tasks to the project team - essential
• Interpreting the analysis results to a high standard and making inferences to point out the directional approach for meeting the requirements - essential
• Advise on design modifications to develop a robust product - essential
• Demonstrate working knowledge of assigning material properties and specifications, and the impact on durability - essential
• Documentation of results compared against requirements for various designs and design changes, preparation of technical reports and presentation of results to a wider audience - essential

Key Responsibilities

• Support product development through leading FE analysis requirements from the validation plan for the product, while ensuring work progresses smoothly within the NPI process – from initial concept and project definition through to design release
• Understanding technical requirements of the projects and making decisions on the entitlement of the requirements for the projects linked to the durability assessment. This would lead to technical discussions with project team and/or customer to finalise the requirements and inputs for the analysis work to be carried out
• Creating the scope of the analysis work to be carried out within a project and estimating the time required to carry out the work content that would need to be fed into the Validation Plan
• Ownership of the FE analysis workload within the assigned project work.
• Undertake a wide range of FE analysis to assess the durability of the product – may include analysis for modal, bending moment, random vibration, static loads, shock loads, thermal loading and others
• Demonstrate a methodical approach with assignment of material properties, specifications, stress-strain relations with respect to the material used
• Interpreting the analysis results to a high standard and making inferences from the results to point out the directional approach for meeting the requirements
• Documentation of results compared against requirements for various designs and design changes, preparation of technical reports and presentation of results to a wider audience. Deliver feedback and recommendations to the design group that drives continuous improvements within the base design/system
• Ability to interact effectively within analysis team and cross-functional teams and provide technical support and advice for projects
• Ability to manage workload to ensure timely delivery and data quality
• Delegation of tasks to FE Engineers based on work scope and skills as appropriate
• Keep up to date with latest industry trends and standards for FEA systems. Drive new methods and tools within Eminox FEA to promote work carried out to the highest standards
• Lead/Create new methods and techniques that will help improve efficiency, accuracy and effectiveness of the simulation and analysis carried out
• Lead the development of robust process and procedures within the team
• Drive correlation of FEA results with experimental test data to understand the influence of FE methods against actual fatigue experienced on products. This includes sensitivity analysis
• Ownership of maintaining quality standards and accessibility by ensuring data is well stored and archived as necessary
• Develop and manage relations with external expert suppliers (software and services) as well as universities where applicable
• Train and mentor junior engineers, helping with defining their technical work load and develop robust processes
• Support the Line Manager to plan and manage departmental resources, workload and budgets
• Ability and willingness to travel, both across UK and overseas where required
