The department is responsible for the manufacture and supply of machined components, complying with drawing specification, to the Production department in a timely manner.

The role involves close liaison with other functional areas of the business to understand the requirements. To manufacture machined components from bar stock using the Star slide head lathe.

Person Specification

• Recognised apprenticeship in Toolmaking / machining operations
• C&G / ONC in Toolmaking / machining

Knowledge and experience:
• Slide head lathe operation
• Slide head lathe set up and programming
• Working to Engineering drawings to fine tolerances
• Knowledge and use of appropriate measurement equipment

• CAD/CAM experience
• Ability to use 2D CAD systems

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities:
• Ability to work from engineering drawings
• Ability to program, set up and operate the slide head lathe, to include
o Bar feeder set up
o Main spindle and sub spindle set up
o Installation and set up of all necessary tools in the machine
o First off and on-going inspection of parts using hand held measuring equipment including:
 Micrometers, calipers, thread gauges etc
• Ability to interact with IFS (Business system) to:
o Access MACH2 workload (shop orders)
o Plan workload to optimise machine operation whilst ensuring supply of machined parts
o Book in completed shop orders
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Ability to solve problems using own initiative
• Ability to produce work to the required tolerances
• Assist with the development of apprentices both within the Toolroom / Machine shop and the wider business
• Ability to train others in the safe operation of the machine
• Any other duties assigned in line with scope of role

Key skills:
• Fully understand the MACH2 work centre demand
• Manage workload to ensure timely supply of machined parts to production
• Carry out regular stock checks to ensure no raw material shortages
• Manufacture machined parts to specification and to satisfy demand
• Inspection (first off and on-going) of machined parts to ensure compliance to specification
• Make adjustments to programs / machine set up to ensure compliance to specification
• Carry out tool changes periodically within a production run to ensure compliance to specification
• Ensure that safe working practices are adhered to
• Take personal accountability for own safety at work as well as the H&S of others
• Identify and report hazards, incidents and accidents in the work place
• Maintain cleanliness standard within the workshop
