Eminox launches first retrofit emissions solution for Mercedes Tourismo coaches

Emissions reduction specialist widens Euro VI compliance range, enabling bus and coach operators to prepare for ULEZ expansion and CAZ introductions

Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, UK, 2 October 2019: Today at Coach & Bus UK, emissions reduction specialist Eminox launched its new retrofit solution for the Mercedes Tourismo coach, which is already in service at Hearn’s Coaches in London.

The new solution enables operators of Europe’s best-selling touring coach to cost-effectively achieve Euro VI emissions compliance, so they can enter the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and forthcoming clean air zones (CAZs) without needing to pay daily charges. It also preserves operators’ investments in their existing fleets, as they can upgrade vehicles rather than replace them.

Eminox, the first company to receive CVRAS approval for both bus and coach, is the UK’s leading retrofit manufacturer, with over 6,000 vehicles already using its SCRT® emissions reduction technology. The new addition expands the Eminox retrofit range, which now includes solutions for Mercedes, ADL, Volvo, Scania, Wright, VDL and Optare.

Eminox also announced its Retrofit Routes to Euro VI initiative, which includes sharing its development roadmap for future retrofit solutions. This aims to inform operators, so they can make cost-effective choices around their fleets moving forward.

Carlos Vicente, retrofit sales director for Eminox, said:

“The new retrofit solution for the Tourismo, along with the already approved system for the Volvo B9R, are part of our strategy to focus on the most popular coaches in the market,”

“This is how we will provide the most cost-effective retrofit solutions to offer an attractive investment for operators. At the same time, given the complexity of the technology and approvals process, it is impossible to develop solutions for every model out there. That’s why we’re sharing our development programme to help operators plan for future compliance as more and more low emission zones are introduced.”

The development process for the Tourismo demonstrated the complexity of creating effective retrofit solutions and Eminox’s advanced design and engineering capabilities. It began with the vehicle being 3D scanned by Eminox’s applications engineering team, in order to build a digital model of the available space for a retrofit solution, as well as identifying locations for pipework, electronics and ancillaries. This allowed Eminox’s in-house designers to model the system configuration to fit the same space as the original emissions system and maximise emissions reduction to meet the Euro VI limits. Additionally, for each vehicle type, Eminox develops a specific electronics integration solution to work with the communications protocol of the CANbus, so all On Board Diagnostics continue to function as normal. The first system was road tested to confirm real-world emissions performance.

The future development programme will see the Eminox retrofit range expand to cover key models for Mercedes, Volvo, Scania, Neoplan, Irizar and Setra coaches.

Alongside its investment in new retrofit solutions, Eminox has opened a dedicated Retrofit Service and Support Centre at its Stoke-on-Trent facility. The refurbished site has three bays to provide specialist fitting capacity, which expands the options for operators. Retrofit solutions can already be installed at customer sites or Eminox’s headquarters in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.
